Foursquare

Filed under: Cell Phone Apps,Personal,Projects — jlindsey @ 8:26 am

So the webcomic www.pvponline.com has a series going on about a program called hopscotch. This app is a parody of Foursquare. I find it interesting this little app. I downloaded it for my phone and setup an account. I will link it to my facebook account here when I get done with this little bet with my girlfriend. It’s similar to google’s latittude in the idea that it’s a great little stocker app. You can see where people have checked in. There are rewards for checking in to new places, and places that you’ve been before a certain ammount of times. You can also become “Mayor” of a location, and aparently you can get discounts in some big cities. All of this I’m sure you have heard about but I think it’s kinda neat.

First day of Class, IPOD and it’s wonderfulness

Yesterday was my first day of class. I took half day off to go and get my book, parking pass, and do some things around town. It actually went rather smoothly. First day of class was good… it was long. It’s not going to leave much time for me to do things around the house monday through thursday. I am remembering different things about this subject in math, so hopefully I will do good. I have a test today in chapter 1. I made my first official recording with my ipod yesterday, seems to have come out pretty good. I did have some problems with my ipod last night. Linux was seeing the ipod, but trying to sync with it, and was waiting for the ipod to “settle” according to dmesg. So I did some research, tried a few things. What finally fixed it was turning hold on and off, then holding the center button and the menu button down till it reset. Now it’s functioning properly within linux and virtual windows. Anyways I’ve got to get back to work / school / life.

Initial Installation

So I’ve completed the initial installation.  One of the things that’s new is the ability to encrypt a file system during the install.  I did not choose this option yet.  I am running KDE and it’s very windows vista looking.

There are beta nvidia drivers, but the installation of one of them mucked the system up, and since I didn’t really have anything on here, I wipped it and started over.  The default kde configuration that I have and drivers seems to keep the cpu just a buzzin with activity.  I hope that when the nvidia drivers come out that are stable for the new xorg that this will drop my cpu usage down from 50%.  I tried to get vmware to install, that wouldn’t work either.  I think it has something to do with the new xorg as well.

One thing that I have liked is the new pulse audio support.  It seems to be much better than in 8.  I can actually controll the volume through the little volume icon on the taskbar or pane as they call it.  In 8, you have to open up some dialog to get it to work, and it’s just a pain all around.

As far as for the future, I hope to get this box up and running in a more efficient manner, with the nvidia drivers, and getting vmware on here and seeing how well it handles that.  I’ll post later on how I feel more about the os.

DVD Collection

So… after 5 hours of dicking around with wordpress I finally got the DVD collection page up and running. It’s not the full collection, but I guess it will have to do for now. I can add to it and update it. If you click on the link of the dvd title, it will take you to a IMDB page for that movie. I don’t have a rating system built in… maybe someday I’ll do that… who knows. Anyway enjoy the list for now, I’ll work on getting the other dvd’s inputed into the database…

OpenBSD 4.3

Soon to be released is OpenBSD 4.3. For those of you who don’t know, OpenBSD was my first Open Source os. I’ve loved it since. It’s clean, it’s less bulky, it’s functional and secure. I use OpenBSD as a primary router / firewall / dns / irc client. It basically does everything for my network. I used to run several OBSD boxes, two in cali, two in denver, I even had one in canadia for a while. With the new OBSD 4.3 my dell T105 works great, the onboard card works as expected. I’ve already got it up and running in my computer rack. I’ve sold my old p3 600 to a buddy of mine. I think it’ll do good for him. I can’t wait for my cd’s I’ve preordered like always the latest release it’s due out every six months this one in May.

Hat Hanger

Yeah so I made this hat hanger out of horseshoes. It’s quite cool. A buddy of mine did the welding. One of these days I gotta learn how to do it. But I took the nails out, and grinded them all shiny, and got the dirt off of them and aranged them. I attached em to the board. He did the important work though.

Dell T105 and OpenBSD 4.2

I’ve got OpenBSD 4.2 AMD 64 running on my Dell T105 to replace the P3 600mhz I have in my rack.  I’ll submit a current txt file of the dmesg.  Right now it seems as though the onboard nic doesn’t really play well with openbsd.  During the install it works just fine, but when you boot into the os, and do a reboot or a halt, get a kernel panic.  Someone on the smp list stated it might be an irq problem, he has the same computer so same problem.  It was my hope to work on it today while I was waiting for some other things to progress along… but then my inet connection at home went down.  Oh well… I’ll keep you informed of the progress and possible problems.  DMESG AMD64 BSD.MP

OpenBSD Router / Firewall

My primary router for my network has been an OpenBSD box for many years. It’s progressed from a sparc classic 60mhz to a 600mhz p3 and now to an dual core Opteron 1.8ghz. I get the new box on thursday of this week. I’m very excited. The config hasn’t changed much, this I’m thankful for. I don’t have to do much to get it setup. As far as firewall, security, and robust functionality, OpenBSD has it. The learning curve is insane for installing. It’s not fun but once you understand how to install it, it’s easy. I started using OpenBSD in the 3.3 ~ 3.4 transition. Currently they are at 4.2 with 4.3 expect probably about May. As far as the robust nature of OpenBSD, it definately has a stripped down feel after an install. It makes it perfect for small systems that are intended for network appliances. PF by far is superior to IPTables/Chains/Whathave you. The simple firewall rulesets are easy for me to understand. The ability it has to drop packets without responding is a nice feature. I was ddos’d a while back and it helped when the idiot was just using one or two machines. Eventually he recruited the help of several of his friends and killed my downstream path. But not having to respond to his requests sure did save me from being kill on my limited upstream from comcast. I think that if I had IPTables running that I would have been killed quite a bit faster. Anyways the box I’m replacing this with is way overkill for what I need. I’ll log my install process on the blog in case anyone cares.

Wireless

The last time I was through sky harbor, I had a 3 hour wait.  I love Sky Harbor airport, compared to the other airport’s I’ve been in.  there are actual sit down resturaunts, they have free wifi.  I’m through sky harbor just about anytime I take a flight… course I fly US Air and that’s their hub.  The wireless like I said is free.  I am somewhat having issues with my wireless card.  I’m not exactly sure what’s going on.  I’m currently running fedora core 8 and have the intel 845 a/g/n card.  The default drivers is what I have loaded witch I think are the IWL drivers.  Anyways I use a cli to connect to wireless networks, so I do my ifconfig wlan0 up, iwlist wlan0 scannning, iwconfig wlan0 essid “SKY HARBOR” or whatever it is, then usually I do a dhclient wlan0, this typically get’s me on any wireless network.  The problem I’m having is that I can connect to the ap, and when I do a dhclient, it disconnects.  The resolution?  Lately I’ve noticed if I do a ifup wlan0 instead of a dhclient.   Anyways my flight is in about 3 hours…  So here I sit at a sports bar sipping a coke.  Laters!
